Doeren's debut a success

Source: Winston-Salem Journal, N.迷你倉C.Sept. 01--RALEIGH -- It was a successful debut for N.C. State's 2013 football team and new coach Dave Doeren on Saturday, but a short-lived one for quarterback Brandon Mitchell. The combination yielded a few mixed results, but the Wolfpack accomplished the main objective with a 40-14 victory against Louisiana Tech on a steamy season-opening day at Carter-Finley Stadium. The Wolfpack's new quick-paced, no-huddle Pistol offense clicked in a hurry under the dual-threat Mitchell, a graduate student who arrived from Arkansas this summer. Mitchell, however, was hurt on State's third offensive series and left the game with the Wolfpack up 14-0.Doeren confirmed that Mitchell's injury was to a bone in a foot and that recovery time is expected to be four to six weeks.Pete Thomas, a former Colorado State quarterback who was assigned backup duty to Mitchell on Wednesday after a preseason battle for the starting spot, took over from there and completed 15 of 27 passes for 212 yards in his debut. Doeren mixed in Bryant Shirreffs in a Wildcat formation and freshman quarterback Josh Taylor in the closing moments." A lot of guys got to be part of this, including four quarterbacks -- that was something I didn't plan on -- but it worked pretty good for us, I guess," Doeren said. "I'm real proud of Pete the way he came in."Doeren said he was pleased with the performance of a thin offensive line, a running game led by freshman Matt Dayes (84 yards, three touchdowns), the receivers' yardage after catches, a defense that had four takeaways and special-teams play. Niklas Sade kicked four field goals. The Wolfpack's start couldn't have been much better. Mitchell, adding a running dimension at quarterback, passed for two first downs and ran for one on an opening 65-yard drive that ended with Tony Creecy's 3-yard touchdown run.Mitchell followed on the next d儲存倉ive by connecting with Rashard Smith on a 56-yard pass, and the Wolfpack led 14-0 after a 2-yard run by Dayes less than six minutes into the game. From there, the Wolfpack turned to the more one-dimensional Thomas, primarily a passer."We'll be good with Pete in there, too," Doeren said. "We're excited about the different things we can do."Thomas said he was disappointed that the Wolfpack "left some points out there.""We can't do that," he said. "I feel we kicked too many field goals. We did a good job of converting them, but we need to punch those in."Dayes was a bright spot."I was pretty much expecting a lot of carries, and I had prepared for that," Dayes said. "As far as the quarterbacks, we have confidence in all of them."Louisiana Tech, which led the nation in total offense last season but lost 32 seniors and had just six returning starters, had 118 yards rushing from Kenneth Dixon but not much else. The Bulldogs lost three fumbles in the first half, but got as close as 27-14 early in the fourth quarter on a 12-yard run by Dixon. But Dayes' final touchdown, on an 18-yard run with 7:13 left, all but iced the victory and spoiled Skip Holtz's debut as Lousiana Tech's coach."I thought our defense competed, but I thought the second half, offensively, was really bad," Holtz said. "If we don't turn those two balls over in the first half on the 10-yard line, it's a 21-all game.... Hopefully, if we learn from those (mistakes), this could be a beneficial tail-whipping."Doeren said of his team's defense: "They held an offense that averaged 590 yards last year to 321 yards. I know they lost a lot of guys, but that's still a prolific offense. And our offense ran for 237 yards. That's good."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 Winston-Salem Journal (Winston Salem, N.C.) Community College soccer: VC women off to 2-0 start

Source: Ventura County Star, Calif. Sept. 01--Having beaten two of the top teams from Northern California, Steve Hoffman only had one issue with the opening weekend of the Ventura College women's soccer season. It began the season rather than finished it."It can't be the end of the year already, can it?" the VC coach asked jokingly.Macey Herrera scored two second-half goals and sophomore Taylor C'debaca also netted as the Pirates knocked off defending state semifinalist Sierra, 3-1, on the final day of the annual Nike Soccer Classic on Saturday afternoon at the VC Sportsplex. When combined with Thurday's win over City College of San Francisco, the result meant Ventura (2-0), ranked No. 16 in the NSCAA national coaches' poll, opened its season with wins over the No. 18 and No. 4 teams in the country."It's a big win, of course," Hoffman said. "You've got to give the kids credit."Both opponents have represented NorCal in the state Final Four over the past two seasons."Not many people will beat these teams," Hoffman said.Herrera took control of a match tied, 1-1, with 20 minutes to play. The Buena High product and Cal State Northrdge transfer earned and converted a penalty kick to give the Pirates the lead in the 72nd minute, then converted a defensive mistake into an insurance goal three minutes later.Having provided the goals, the center forward then added some entertainment, using a spin move to beat two opponents while holding possession to help run out the clock."You liked that, didn't you?" Hoffman asked. "She's on another level."Counting last week's scrimmage at Orange Coast, Herrera has netted four times in her first three matches in orange and black.Just as it had two nights prior in the 2-迷你倉價錢 win over visiting CCSF, the Pirates jumped on their visitors from NorCal. C'debaca, who missed much of her freshman campaign with a knee injury, smashed VC into the lead in the 25th minute, pulling up on a partial breakaway to finish low.Sierra equalized nine minutes later on a spectacular goal from midfielder Virginia Millan, who floated in a first-time chip into the upper corner from 25 yards. After playing only 15 in Thursday's win over San Francisco, Hoffman played at least 22 in the oppressive afternoon heat."It's a good team effort," midfielder A.J. Tewes said. "A lot of people played today and we needed them."Sophomore Lupita Magana, playing as a central midfielder, was one of the few players to complete all 90 minutes."This is our preseason," Magana said. "We're still getting into shape. But these are the type of games that really get us ready for the season."Oxnard stays unbeatenThe Oxnard College women's soccer team stayed unbeaten and unscored upon with a 0-0 draw with visiting Sacramento City in the opening match of its annual Condor Classic tournament.Freshman goalkeeper Andrea Bautista kept her second shutout in two matches."You've got to like that," Oxnard coach Bill Propster said.Oxnard (1-0-1) had several chances to grab all three points.Freshman forward Angela Turner-Harvey had a goal disallowed in the first half. Freshman Breanna Martin hit the post and also earned a penalty kick, from which sophomore Emily Perez rattled the crossbar. The Condors host Antelope Valley Sunday at noon to conclude the event.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 Ventura County Star (Camarillo, Calif.) 5 killed as quake strikes near Shangri-La

An earthquake hit a remote part of southwest China’s Yunnan Province near the popular tourist area of Shangri-La yesterday, killing five people and injuring 24 others.mini storageThe quake, on the border with Sichuan Province, set off landslides, blocked roads, cut  communications and toppled or damaged tens of thousands of homes in the mountainous area. The Yunnan government put the death toll at five. At least 24 people were injured, the Xinhua news agency said.Among the dead was a tourist bus driver whose vehicle was hit by falling rocks, said officials. The 5.9-magnitude quake, which struck at 8:04am, centered on Yunnan’s Benzilan town. It was about 10 kilometers deep.It toppled 600 homes and damaged more than 55,000, forcing some 9,200 residents to be relocated, Xinhua said.China Central Television showed clouds of dust rising from landslides on mountains and pieces of broken cement that had fallen from buildings.“During the quake, the swaying was relatively severe,” Liao Wencai, deputy Party secretary of Deqen, self storagetold Xinhua.Benzilan is in Deqen County, 60 kilometers from Shangri-La county, named after the fictional mountain paradise in James Hilton’s novel “Lost Horizon.”Local officials borrowed the name to attract more tourists to the area, which had around 7.6 million travellers last year.Shangri-La itself was little affected, residents said.“The building just shook a little and then everything returned to normal fairly fast,” an employee at a local hotel said. The Ministry of Civil Affairs said it was sending tents, blankets and clothing to the areas that were most affected. The government has closed  off some scenic spots in the area, Xinhua said. The earthquake was the second in the area in four days, following a 5.1-magnitude quake on Wednesday. In July, twin quakes killed at least 95 people in China’s western Gansu Province.A magnitude 6.6 earthquake in Sichuan Province killed about 200 people earlier this year, five years after almost 90,000 people were killed by a huge quake in the same province.

Employment gateway poised to guide young job seekers

Source: Jordan Times, AmmanAug. 30--AMMAN -- Labour Minister Nidal Katamine on Thursday inaugurated the USAID-funded One-Stop-Shop -- Employment Opportunities Gateway.Young job seekers across the Kingdom will soon be able to access comprehensive employment services through the gateway, which will offer career guidance services, workshops, life-skills training, job fairs and entrepreneurship support in one location."This initiative is one of many the ministry has been embarking on to facilitate the recruitment process and offer employers and employees an opportunity to meet directly and match available skills with the requirements of job vacancies," Katamine said at the event, adding that the ministry will expand this new service to its labour directorates over the next four months. The minister explained that the gateway will offer training courses delivered by representatives of the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation and the National Company for Employment and Training, in addition to funding for small projects through the Development and Employment Fund's (DEF) on-site lending office. The DEF will have a window for citizens seeking to start small- or medium-sized enterprises, and priority will be given to pioneering ideas that can generate jobs, according to Katamine. He said qualified International Youth Foundation (IYF) personnel will provide the life-skills training, adding that the gateway will also link job seekers with private sector representatives, noting that many unemployed youth are discouraged by the bureaucratic procedures that accompany the recruitment process and end up losing an opportunity to find work."Hopefully, the one-stop-shop will eliminate the long waiting hours at government windows for stamping or filling out documents needed to compl迷你倉te the recruitment process, thus cutting down the period between applying for a job and being appointed," he said. The gateway is expected to encourage more people to sign up on the ministry's job search website, and will work on matching the job seekers' skills with the jobs in demand, Katamine told The Jordan Times in a recent interview, adding that the ministry has allocated staff for this initiative to facilitate unemployed Jordanians' access to the jobs available in the local market. In addition, ministry teams will carry out field surveys to measure skills available among job seekers across the country to compile a detailed database that will be presented to employers in an effort to ensure that young people are employed based on their qualifications.Commending the ministry's efforts, USAID Mission Director Beth Paige said that it had "taken bold measures in tackling employability issues and strengthening and making more efficient the employment services that the ministry offers".IYF Jordan Country Director Rana Turk voiced hope "that the gateway will bring young men and women across the Kingdom one step closer to securing their dream jobs, while creating a sustainable support structure over the long term for unemployed youth."Youth for the Future is a five-year programme of the IYF carried out in partnership with USAID and the government.Working in collaboration with public, private and civil society organisations, it creates an enabling environment for vulnerable youth aged 15 to 24 by improving the quality of services offered to those who have dropped-out of school, are unemployed, or lack opportunity.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Jordan Times (Amman, Jordan) Visit the Jordan Times (Amman, Jordan) at .jordantimes.com Distributed by MCT Information Services儲存

FIU drops out of reunion game for Cuban baseball players

Source: The Miami HeraldAug. 30--Even before the first pitch, the 50th anniversary "reunion" game of Cuba's famed Industriales baseball team has been dominated by community infighting, finger-pointing, and mutual suspicion -- all over an event which organizers say was supposed to promote unity among the island's people. Some exile groups view the Havana baseball team as a propaganda tool for the Castro dictatorship. When Florida International University last month abruptly pulled out as a host site for the doubleheader game, event organizers complained the university was giving in to community pressure. At 11 a.m. Saturday, the exhibition game -- reuniting former Industriales players from Cuba and the United States -- will go on, thanks to a last-minute booking at the city-owned Fort Lauderdale stadium. Among those taking part: 75-year-old Antonio "Tony" Gonzalez, a shortstop from the 1960s, and Orlando "El Duque" Hernandez, who fled Cuba in 1997 and signed with the New York Yankees."It's a historic meeting. It's amazing," Gonzalez recently told the BBC network. A similar exhibition game was held last week in Tampa, with little controversy.Game organizer Alejandro Canton is still bitter about FIU's sudden withdrawal, calling it "disrespectful.""It was in the middle of Miami, closer to everybody ... this is our city, we want to enjoy our city, and it's just a game," he said.Others say the mere idea of Industriales players taking the field at FIU was offensive. The university has a large Cuban-American student population, and next door to its main campus, at Tamiami Park, is the Cuban Memorial monument that honors victims of Fidel Castro's oppressive government."These guys, they want to play baseball in the same place, you believe that?" said Miguel Saavedra, head of the exile group Vigilia Mambisa. The Industriales team, he says, is "the right hand of the Castro regime."FIU administrators have said little about the event. In public records obtained by the American Civil Liberties Union, FIU appeared to be fully cooperative in the idea of hosting the game -- until, all of a sudden, it wasn't.The university's contract with Canton, for games to be held Aug. 10-11, allowed FIU to cancel at any time if the university determined the event "is not in the best interest of FIU due to circumstances beyond FIU's reasonable control."It was that clause -- with no further explanation -- that the university cited when notifying Canton that the game was being called off. When the cancellation subsequently made international news, FIU released this short statement: "FIU Athletics has canceled a contract with Somos Cuba Entertainment Group for the use of one of FIU's athletic venues. The event was canceled due to a contractual matter. We regret any inconvenience this has caused."The university declined to comment further this week. Almost a month after the cancellation, FIU's lawyers told Canton there were additional justifications for the university's action: Canton had failed to pay the required $7,940 fee to secure the stadium, and FIU regulations limit political speech to designated "Free Assembly Areas" on campus, which don't include athletic facilities. In the weeks since FIU bowed out, the ACLU has requested hundreds of pages of documents from 儲存he university. In making the records requests, the ACLU said it suspected that FIU violated the First Amendment rights of the baseball game organizers by cancelling an event simply because its political message might be unpopular.Miami has a history of constitutional violations when it comes to performers or artists perceived as friendly to the Castro regime. In 1989, the city of Miami moved to terminate the lease of a Cuban museum that planned to sell artwork created by artists who had not formally denounced Castro. The museum sued on First Amendment grounds and won.In 2003, the city of Miami lost another free speech court case, after a federal judge found that the city had inappropriately charged more than $36,000 in security fees to a concert by Cuban musicians Los Van Van -- a group some accuse of having communist leanings. The judge ruled that the fees were essentially a tax on unpopular speech. In the case of the Industriales baseball game, the records obtained by the ACLU reveal little about how the decision to cancel was made.On July 15, university administrators (including FIU's Cuban-American athletic director, Pete Garcia) circulated a list of the participating baseball players via e-mail.About seven hours later, FIU general counsel Kristina Raattama sent a one-sentence e-mail: "Go ahead and send the termination notice."What happened during that seven-hour period? Maria Kayanan, an attorney for the ACLU, calls that the "black hole" of information in the case. The ACLU says Saavedra's exile group boasted last month of meeting with FIU administrators and persuading them to pull out of the game. In an interview with the Miami Herald, however, Saavedra insisted he'd only sent a letter to FIU, not had an actual meeting, and that he is not responsible for any decisions the university made.Saavedra, along with others opposed to the baseball game, will be meeting Saturday morning at Little Havana's Versailles restaurant. The group will then ride a chartered bus up to Fort Lauderdale to wave signs and protest the event. Two of the names on the list of players -- Javier Mendez and Juan Padilla -- are despised by some in the exile community. They are famous for punching a Cuban exile who ran onto the field during the 1999 Pan-American Games in Winnipeg, Canada. Diego Tintorero was holding a sign pledging support for dissidents on the island when he ran onto the field.Canton said the punching incident has been overblown. A Cuban exile himself, Canton said athletes on the island are fed a narrative that the world outside their borders is evil -- psychologically, they're steeled for battle when they travel abroad."The first thing that comes to their mind is 'I'm going to defend my country!' " Canton said. "It's a war."Canton said he doesn't oppose protesters coming to the exhibition game and making their opinions known, but he still hopes the event will bring the Cuban community closer together. Once on the field, the former teammates -- now living in separate nations -- will share hugs, Canton said."Cuba is opening to the world right now, little by little," Canton said. "I think Miami has to do the same."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Miami Herald Visit The Miami Herald at .miamiherald.com Distributed by MCT Information Services新蒲崗迷你倉

Nickelsville ready to morph into 3 parts

Source: The Seattle TimesAug.self storage 30--As Sunday's deadline approaches for the Nickelsville homeless encampment to clear city-owned property, it is multiplying, moving to three different sites over the weekend with the help of local churches and housing advocates.Nickelsville, born in 2008, has been all over town. Since May 2011, it has built a community of people living in tents, homemade plywood-and-tarp structures, on pallets and in small sheds. The site has a chicken coop, goats and a little barn, a large tent of donated clothes, portable toilets, picnic tables and a cooking area. This spring, the Seattle City Council signed a $500,000 contract with the Union Gospel Mission to help Nickelsville residents find housing. The mission workers had a tough time, since many residents resented the effort to scatter the group, said Union Gospel Mission Special Projects Director Mike Johnson.Johnson said the population has nearly doubled since the mission started reaching out to residents July 3, from 80 to more than 150. In the end, his group found housing for 40 people. It gave an additional eight money to help them travel to where they had family or friends they could stay with, Johnson said. They hope to house 12 more people before Sunday.More than 100 are expected to move this weekend to three church-sponsored sites -- one at 20th Avenue South and South Jackson Street in the Central District, another in Skyway, and the third at a yet-unrevealed Seattle neighborhood, according to Sharon Lee, executive director of the Low Income Housing Institute, which has been helping Nickelsville residents.Signs posted around the camp urge people to pack up and be ready to move.Nickelsville has been both a political statement and a community since a group of homeless people set up bright pink tents on a piece of public property in 2008 and named the encampment for then-Mayor Greg Nickels.Mayor Mike McGinn took office at the beginning of 2010 and allowed the encampment to stay in an old city fire station, then on the current unused city property along West Ma迷你倉ginal Way Southwest. The city has spent at least $26,000 on supplies to build platforms on cinder blocks, keeping the tents dry when the property floods, pest control and waste removal. The camp's fate is coming to a head in the middle of McGinn's race for re-election. He spent years working on legislation to open up more property to encampments, but the council did not support it.McGinn's opponent, state Sen. Ed Murray, has said he agrees with the council's approach. On Thursday, he said the city must find housing for people with pets and partners, who often find encampments are their best option. With a systematic approach, he said, "Over time, you shrink the Nickelsville phenomenon."Penny Lane Pannek's student loan fell through, so she moved to Nickelsville with her boyfriend in July. The Union Gospel Mission helped her find an apartment."I drove by it," she said. "It looks all right." But her boyfriend will not be allowed to stay there.Richard Gilbert, who has lived at Nickelsville since it began, said new people arrive daily. On Monday, two families at Nickelsville said they weren't sure where to enroll their kids in school, because they didn't know where they would be in a week.In the middle of the camp this week, two Union Gospel Mission workers had set up under a tent, with a laptop. Around them, camp life continued as usual, with no sign that their community was about to be dispersed.Kids gathered around the fire pits, playing with new backpacks and school supplies as they anticipated the start of school. At the security hut, a family of five from San Antonio who spent Monday night in a car was weighing whether Nickelsville would be better, even for a few days.At the far end of the camp, by the goat pen, a little girl ran down the path to announce a hot lunch was ready."Fried chicken on the west side!" she hollered.Emily Heffter: 206-464-8246 or eheffter@seattletimes.com. Fire crews, weather make inroads against Big Windy Complex

Source: Mail Tribune, Medford, Ore.mini storageAug. 30--The worst-case scenario for the Big Windy Complex fire may not come to pass, thanks to efforts by firefighters and a little assistance from Mother Nature. The fire complex, which fire officials a month ago feared would consume up to 50,000 acres by fall, is now 55 percent contained at 24,137 acres.Although officials stress the fire danger remains extreme with plenty of time ahead for flare-ups, they also say they are gaining on the fire."When that weather started changing, it really helped us out," said fire command center spokeswoman Mary Bell Lunsford. "We haven't had to do as much burning out as we had anticipated."However, officials are not yet ready to talk about the total acres they anticipate will burn, preferring to see how things play out in the next few days. They are shooting for containment on Sept. 7.Shortly after the fire was sparked by lightning on July 26, fire officials, fearing the worst because of high temperatures and rugged terrain, called for using the Rogue River on the north and the Bear Camp Road to the south as fire lines. The lines looped around an enormous tract of unburned land but were deemed the safest and surest points to stop the burn. After days of triple digit temperatures in July, the region has been bathed in cooler weather, including rain last weekend and more showers predicted. The mercury in the burned area some 25 miles northwest of Grants Pass was in the upper 70s Thursday afternoon, Lunsford observed."We have a marine (air) push coming, so the humidity is a lot higher now," she said of the humidity which rose to 90 percent. "That helps the firefighters."Containment lines have been completed on the fire's west flank. Reinforcement of those lines continue with firefighters mopping up 100 to 200 feet inside the fire line, Lunsford said. However, citing the need to keep roads clear for fire equipment and related reforestation traffic, the U.S. Forest Service has decided to keep the Bear Camp and Burnt Ridge roads closed to the public until the end of September."We regret limiting public access to the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest and the Rogue River," said deputy forest supervisor Tracy Tophooven in a prepared statement."However, we must keself storagep public health and safety our priority during this very active fire season," she added. "Although the fire activity may be minimal after rain, there is still plenty of potential for active fire behavior as soon as temperatures rise and weather conditions change."Bear Camp Road between Gold Beach and Galice is traditionally used as the main route during the summer by floaters returning to the Grants Pass area after a trip through the popular wild section of the lower Rogue. That return trip now must be taken via the coast, with the cost for shuttling rafters' vehicles to the Foster Bar takeout doubling from $100 to $200.The river had been closed because of the fire but has since been reopened to folks from around the world who come to float it on raft, kayak or drift boats. The closure of the Rogue River Trail from Grave Creek to the Rogue River Ranch has also been lifted.Meanwhile, flags have been lowered to half staff across the state for firefighter Oscar Montano-Garcia of Medford who collapsed Sunday while on a lunch break with other crew members fighting the Nabob fire, located in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest just across the California state line.Emergency personnel administered CPR but were unable to revive Montano-Garcia, according to the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department. The U.S. Fire Administration indicated on its website that Montano-Garcia was part of a pump operations crew. Various records indicate he was in his 50s.Four Oregonian wildland firefighters have died this year while on the job.Jesse Trader, a 19-year-old water truck driver from Albany, was killed Aug. 6 on the Big Windy Complex fire after his vehicle hit an embankment and overturned on Bear Camp Road. Kevin Hall, 59, of Ontario, died Aug. 10 after apparently suffering a medical issue while working on a fire line on the Grassy Mountain fire, about 60 miles southwest of Boise, Idaho. John Hammack, 58, of Madras, was killed Aug. 1 by a falling tree while removing hazardous trees in the path of a small wildfire in the remote Mount Washington Wilderness Area in the high CascadesCopyright: ___ (c)2013 the Mail Tribune (Medford, Ore.) Error costs Everbright millions

Former CEO banned from industry after computerized trading mistake By Chen Jiachenjia1@chinadaily.儲存倉com.cn It took only three minutes. The operational error made by Everbright Securities two weeks ago has earned it a 523 million yuan ($85 million) fine from the nation's top securities regulator, for insider trading, release of misleading information, and muffed risk control. That is the largest fine the regulator has ever given a securities brokerage in the history of the country's stock market. China Securities Regulatory Commission announced the punitive measures on Friday after a two-week investigation of Everbright Securities' near hysterical trading behavior that shocked the domestic A-share market on Aug 16. The brokerage will be fined five times its insider-trading-related gains, the CSRC spokesman said. In addition, Everbright Securities' former president Xu Haoming, assistant executive Yang Chizhong, general manager of the accounting department Shen Shiguang and general manager of the strategic investment department Yang Jianbo were each fined 600,000 yuan. And they were all banned from the securities industry for life. Xu resigned after the firm caused the biggest swing in the benchmark stock index since 2009. Mei Jian, secretary of the board of directors of Everbright Securities, was fined 200,000 yuan for giving the media erroneous information on how the abnormal market fluctuation occurred, an error that influenced investors' decisions that day. The CSRC also banned the securities company from proprietary trading for three months and suspended approval for new Everbright services. The penalties may hurt the company's business and its brand reputation, possibly causing its shares to drop sharply next week, analysts said. However, online chat rooms were abuzz with people saying the penalties were too lenient. As of 9 pm on Friday, a survey on ifeng.com, a popular news portal, showed that more than 80 percent of 30,000 respondents thought that Everbright had manipulated the stock market and should be fined more. Everbright's proprietary business mistakenly sent buy orders worth 23.4 billion yuan on Aug 16 to the Shanghai Stock Exchange, and finally completed transactions of 7.27 billion yuan, which lifted the Shanghai Composite Index by 5.96 percent in three minutes. Fine: 'Case prompts new laws' The company's 迷你倉價錢our chief decision-makers decided to short-sell the stock index futures in order to hedge risks, before disclosing the information to the public market. According to the leader of the investigative department of the CSRC, the trading system, described as an innovative "high-frequency" trading program, one that makes a large number of trades in a very short time, had been used for fewer than 15 trading days. The brokerage only began designing it in June. Everbright's strategic investment department had never been included in the company's internal risk control system. The flaws in the technology were not discovered because of insufficient testing, the CSRC said. Huang Wei, the CSRC legal department's director-general and chief counsel, said on Friday that this is an "extreme"case scenario that had never before occurred in China's equity market, and it alerted the watchdog to the need for better laws and regulations. "This year, one of our key tasks is to research and modify the Securities Law and prepare to create a Futures Law," Huang said. To date, there has been no law or regulation specifically dealing with high-frequency trading. Huang explained that Everbright was not found to have manipulated the market because there was no evidence that employees had acted with the intention of making a huge gain through the buy orders. Song Yixin, a lawyer from Shanghai Xinwang Wenda Law Firm, suggested building a mechanism in stock exchanges that can immediately stop trading when abnormal signals come out. He also called on Everbright to set up a special fund that can be used to compensate investors. As earlier reported in the media, every shareholder who owns Everbright's stock could have lost 4,160 yuan on average on the first day of trading after the incident. According to the CSRC, investors who suffered losses from the incident can sue for compensation. "It's good news for the stock market, because the CSRC's quick action showed its determination to keep a tight lid on on illegal trading, which can better protect investors' interests," said Gui Haoming, chief analyst of the Shenyin Wanguo Securities Co. Everbright Securities, a unit of State-owned China Everbright Group and the seventh-largest brokerage by assets, had net income of 810 million yuan in the first half, a 2.2 percent decrease from the same period of last year.

TECO, Duke ask for higher electric rates to adjust for fuel costs

Source: Tampa Tribune, Fla. Aug. 30--Both Tampa Electric Co. and Duke Energy are requesting higher electricity rates for customers, as the two major power companies make adjustments for the cost of fuels like coal and natural gas.Tampa Electric officials are asking for adjustments that would add $1.27 per month toward the $103.85 bill for the average household that uses 1,000 kilowatt-hours, about a 1.2 percent rise from the current $102.58 a month. Commercial and industrial customers would see bills rise by 1.4 percent and 1.5 percent, respectively. That's in addition to an earlier Tampa Electric request for an increase of another $10.41 a month -- or 35 cents a day -- for the average residential customer due to what the company calls "rising costs and sluggish growth."Duke Energy is asking for another $8.24 per month (a 7 percent hike) for the average monthly bill, which would go from $116.06 to $124.30.If approved, the new prices would go into effect with the first billing cycle for January 2014.Power companies divide their bills between "fuel costs" that are passed directly on to customers and "base rates" that cover the corporate operations of things such as power plants, transmission lines, personnel, investor dividends and maintenance. The fuel cost changes come both as the raw cost of coal and natural gas move in the迷你倉出租markets, but also as companies make predictions for where they think costs will go. Ultimately, they ask state regulators for adjustments, partly based on how close they came in their predictions.TECO serves about 1 million customers, about 685,000 residential users across the Tampa region, and is already looking to raise rates on customers by about 10 percent to pay for what the company says are necessary upgrades -- an increase worth about $135 million per year. That request presently is before state regulators who may make a decision by the end of the year.Duke serves about 1.7 million customers in 33 Florida counties, including about 755,000 in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Pasco, Hernando and Polk. Last year, Duke filed requests to lower electricity rates by about 6 percent, from $123.19 to about $115.75, though Duke's rate picture is somewhat obscured by the wider issue that the company plans to retain millions of dollars in fees collected for a nuclear power plant that the company ultimately decided against building. The Florida Public Service Commission will hear the fuel-related requests on November 4.rmullins@tampatrib.com (813) 259-7919 Twitter: @DailyDeadlineCopyright: ___ (c)2013 the Tampa Tribune (Tampa, Fla.) Journalist concludes T-D career

Source: The Tribune-Democrat, Johnstown, Pa. Aug. 30--JOHNSTOWN -- Veteran Johnstown journalist Bruce J. Wissinger is calling it quits today.Wissinger has been ensconced at The Tribune-Democrat's main office in Johnstown for 43 years, often working behind the scenes to deliver the news and offer opinions on far-ranging subjects with his daily editorials. He's in charge of the editorials and letters to the Readers' Forum, a columnist on the op-ed page and a member of the newspaper's three-person Editorial Board. Other members are Publisher Robin L. Quillon and Editor Eric Knopsnyder. But Wissinger built his career on a solid foundation of good journalistic practices he has developed since joining the newspaper in 1970.He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh and landed his first job as a general assignment/police reporter with The Tribune-Democrat.Wissinger's career path led to a variety of news beats and copy editor assignments. He became a copy editor in 1977, and later, the chief copy editor. He was named news editor in 1988, and in 1991 took over the Style section.Wissinger became The Tribune-Democrat's editorial page editor in 1994, a position he continues to hold.Quillon called Wissinger a respected journalist who moves with quiet dignity and will be sorely missed."For 19 years, Bruce has been the good shepherd of the most sacred page in a newspaper -- the editorial page -- a page where ideas, opinions and arguments respectfully meet," Quillon said. "His editorials over the years have offered thoughtful insights, uplifted and encouraged, scolded and pricked the conscience of our community and her leaders."Quillon said Wissinger possesses an enviable gift of being able to distill a complex issue down to its simplest core. The only other jobs Wissinger has ever known were as a youngster working at summer construction jobs, as a gas station attendant, and at Acme Markets while attending Pitt.Wissinger has conquered any job in the newsroom he was asked to do. He covered civic and government meetings, took obituaries from funeral directors and reported on the police beat."In all my years at The Tribune, my favorite job was covering the police and fire departments because I found them to be wonderful, unselfish people who I learned to admire and respect for the jobs they do," he said. "They always treated me well, and I will never forget that."Wissinger was so impressed with these public servants that he applied to become a state policeman early in his career."I passed all the tests, but at that time, many Vietnam veterans were returning from war and the numbers were not in my favor to be selected," Wissinger said. The state police's loss was the community's gain, according to former Tribune-Democrat Publisher Pamela J. Mayer."Bruce was a veteran newspaperman when I started to work at the paper," she said. "In addition to his education, he was trained by one of the best, Ron Gatehouse. Gate was demanding and particular. Bruce not only survived Gate's tutelage, but he thrived as a newspaperman."She describes Wissinger as dependable, calm and accurate; everything a newspaper requires on deadline. When Wissinger took over the responsibilities for the editorial page, he and Mayer worked as a team."Bruce was always on time, always appropriate, always accurate and consistently fair and polite," she said. "I learned a lot from Bruce as we toiled through editorial meetings, endorsement decisions, upset readers, question-and-answer sessions and edited the letters to the Read迷你倉價錢rs' Forum."Thanks to Bruce, I know about motorcycles, gun permits and the gym at Memorial Medical Center," Mayer said. "I also know how 'not' to get a squirrel out of your laundry room."She called Wissinger a true newspaperman who brought a depth to the paper that won't easily be replaced.Through it all, Wissinger has seen vast changes in the newspaper businessduring his career. When he first walked into the newsroom and took his place at a typewriter, the newspaper was produced using hot metal, a technique that had been used by printers for hundreds of years. He soon had to make a transition to using computers when the newspaper converted to high-tech equipment."Technology and computerization have revolutionized the industry," he said. "We now see one person doing the work that once required a multitude of people."Wissinger said the rewards and challenges of his career were closely related."The rewards and challenges came in the hundreds of interviews over the years I conducted as part of the question-and-answer sessions we did for our Sunday Opinion Page," he said. "From presidential candidates, senators, congressmen and the community's movers and shakers, the one person I admired the most was the late (U.S. Rep.) John Murtha. I was awed by his dedication to Johnstown and the people of this country."While the work was demanding, Wissinger says he'll miss the people he works with and remember those who have helped him achieve his objectives."A lot of people have helped me like the late Ron Gatehouse," he said. "There are so many talented and professional colleagues in the organization who I have been privileged to know, but I would be remiss if I didn't thank (former editor) George Fattman as well as (former publishers) Dick and Pam Mayer."He said he also will miss the many friends he encountered while standing in front of the Tribune building at lunchtime and with whom he often exchanged banter and good-natured ribbing.Wissinger resides in Adams Township with his wife, the former Darlene Bellock. She is a charge nurse in ambulatory surgery at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center, and will join her husband in retirement in September after completingher own career of 44 years. The couple have one son, Darrin, who along with his wife, Kristin, and their two children, Ashley, 17, and Hayden, 15, reside in Canonsburg, Washington County.Wissinger is a 1965 graduate of Adams-Summerhill High School, now part of the Forest Hills School District. He is the son of Betty (Brewer) Wissinger of South Fork R.D. 1 and the late Sheldon Wissinger Sr."I plan to work around the house and yard doing some jobs that I have been paying others to do," he said. "But high on my list is spending more time with my son's family before my grandchildren head off for college."He also will pursue a passion that has helped him relieve stress and find enjoyment for decades: Riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle.A proud member of HOG (Harley Owners Group), Wissinger will use his newfound freedom to enjoy the open road."For years, I would ride through so many beautiful towns to get to a destination," he said. "Now, we can revisit those places and take a day or two to enjoy the surroundings without the worry of being home in time for work."Tom Lavis covers Features for the Tribune-Democrat. Mayoral hopefuls air differences on union mandate

M.Aug. 30--Who says candidates running for public office all sound alike?Certainly not when it comes to whether Albuquerque should adopt an ordinance that would impose union-friendly conditions on city-financed construction projects.Consider:Mayor Richard Berry is opposed to such an ordinance, saying it would raise the cost of public projects and hurt working families.Challenger Pete Dinelli is in favor of it, arguing it would ensure fair pay for work, quality control and worker safety. And challenger Paul Heh, who originally opposed the concept when he thought New Mexico was a right-to-work state, now says he supports it.That's the short version of where the three mayoral candidates stand six weeks before the Oct. 8 election on what are known as "project labor agreements."The controversial issue emerged publicly this week during the question-and-answer portion of a mayoral candidate forum sponsored by the NAIOP, a commercial real estate development association.Roxanne Rivera-Wiest, president of the Associated Builders and Contractors of New Mexico, used the opportunity to ask all three candidates whether they support such agreements for city projects. Her association is a strong opponent of the practice. In essence, these agreements -- sometimes referred to as "community workforce agreements" -- require contractors bidding on big municipal projects to use union labor and generally abide by union working conditions. The agreements set the terms and conditions of employment that must be adhered to for the duration of a project.Generally, the agreements contain language that calls for workers to be hired through union halls, though nonunion workers can join a union and pay union dues specifically for the duration of the project. The agreements also may prohibit strikes or lockouts. In New Mexico, only 8 percent of the construction workforce is unionized, according to statistics compiled by the state building association.National debateThe Albuquerque mayor's race isn't the only place where the pros and cons of project labor agreements have been debated in recent years. Two months ago, South Carolina became the 17th state in the nation to ban state government entities from entering into these labor agreements for public projects. In doing so, it joined Arizona, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Virginia as states that have adopted similar measures in the past three years.A "demand" for the end of project labor agreements even made it into the Republican Party platform in 2012.Historically, these labor agreements have been around since the late 1930s, authorized by passage of the National Labor Relations Act of 1935. On the federal level, they have been used to build the Grand Coulee Dam in Washington state, the Nevada Test Site and the Launch Operations Center at NASA's Cape Canaveral, among many other projects.Closer to homeSanta Fe recently went full circle with a community workforce agreement ordinance -- from introduction to adoption to repeal, all in one year -- without its provisions ever being applied to a single project. In February 2012, the Santa Fe City Council voted unanimously to adopt such an ordinance, which required contractors bidding on city projects in excess of $500,000 to use union labor, among other provisions. That led to an intense campaign by opponents of the ordinance -- including the state building association and the Santa Fe Area Home Builders Association -- that persuaded the council to delay implementation until administrative procedures were in place.Opponents argued that the ordinance would raise the cost of taxpayer-financed projects, impose unfair burdens on contracmini storageors and shrink a community's pool of potential bidders.Ultimately, after several unsuccessful attempts to amend the controversial law, the council voted, 5-3, to repeal the ordinance altogether last February without ever applying it to a construction project.Dinelli: Good for workersDuring the NAIOP forum, Dinelli told attendees the ordinance "hasn't hurt the city of Santa Fe," but he failed to mention the ordinance was repealed before it ever was implemented. He said in an interview later that day that he believes the repeal was a mistake."Yes, I could support a project labor agreement for all major projects undertaken by the city (of Albuquerque)," he said.Dinelli, a Democrat, said such an ordinance would blend well with his Energize ABQ economic development plan, which among other things calls for the investment of $1.5 billion into infrastructure improvements. The former chief public safety officer, deputy city attorney and city councilor also cited the use of a project labor agreement by the University of New Mexico Board of Regents in 2004, when it went out to bid to build a $183 million wing for its Children's Hospital. That is believed to be the last time a project labor agreement has been used for a major construction project in Albuquerque, in part because of the controversy it generated at the time.Dinelli said a project labor agreement "guarantees the quality of work and workmanship, and guarantees a fair wage to workers. It also will guarantee that workers won't be taken advantage of. That's my biggest reason to support."As for the popular arguments cited by opponents of these labor agreements, Dinelli said: "I think a lot of that is more nonsense than reality."Berry: Bad for cityBerry disagrees. At Monday's forum, the Republican mayor labeled as "insane" the idea of forcing unionism on people "to be able to work in this town."In a later interview with the Journal , Berry said the adoption of a project labor agreement ordinance by the city would raise taxes by boosting the cost of public construction projects, make it more difficult for small businesses to compete and hurt working families. If such an agreement became city law, Berry said, it would exclude between 60 percent and 70 percent of businesses that normally would bid on a city contract, unless they agreed to use union labor."Anytime you limit your competition, the prices are going to go up for our boss -- the taxpayers," he said. "Let people go out and compete. Let them go out and bid for jobs. If its union, great. If it's nonunion, great."Heh: Changed stanceHeh, a former police sergeant who retired two years ago from the Albuquerque Police Department, has changed his position on such an ordinance in the past few days.Originally, the Republican told the Journal that he was opposed to project labor agreements because he didn't believe they could work in a right-to-work state, a position he reiterated at Monday's mayoral forum. When informed that New Mexico was not a right-to-work state, Heh dropped his opposition to such an ordinance."I guess I should have been informed better," he said Wednesday. "My problem was that I really didn't fully understand right to work." Heh, who said he has been "a union guy all my life," acknowledged that union labor can push up the cost of city-financed construction projects, but he said that shouldn't be the only factor."You have to examine the bids and not just go with the low bid," he said. "And you can't discount unions because they might be a little higher."Copyright: ___ (c)2013 the Albuquerque Journal (Albuquerque, N.M.)

HK children’s painted scroll sets Guinness World Record

By Grace Chai in Hong Konggrace@chinadailyhk.迷你倉出租comHong Kong set a new Guinness World Record on Friday with the longest-ever children's painting, a 1,100-meter-scroll, depicting Victoria Harbour at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre.Cheng Dong, official adjudicator of Guinness World Records announced the successful record-breaking attempt, and Peter Lam Kin-ngok, chairman of the Hong Kong Tourism Board, witnessed the historic moment.Thirty young Hong Kong artists had created the draft for the scroll since July, and the remaining task was to paint the beautiful Victoria Harbour shore in watercolors. The work was completed by more than 2,000 Hong Kong residents, mostly children, each of whom received an official certificate of participation. This event is a special part of the International Children Painting Competition (ICPC) in Hong Kong 2012/13."This is a dream come true for me," said Henry Lau, a renowned Hong Kong artist and founder of the event. During a European painting competition eight years ago, Lau first had the idea of organizing an international competition in Hong Kong to act as a platform for young and talented local artists. The competition was launched by the Promotion of Young Artists' Foundation in September last year. More than 10,000 paintings from 52 countries and regions were submitted in the first round and 60 finalists chosen thereafter. They and 20 local contestants entered the final round, a six-day on-site painting of seven landmarks and tourist attractions in Hong Kong, including Ocean Park, Stanley Plaza, Chek Lap Kok Internationa迷你倉 Airport and the MTR stations. The event marked the inaugural visit of many international students and teachers to Hong Kong who were inspired by its aesthetic. "The light here is very good for painting, like crystal," said Liudmila Lonescu, an art teacher from Nicolae Tonitza High School of Plastic Arts in Romania."Painting is a reflection of culture. I hope local students can communicate with international participants and know more about their styles and techniques, and more importantly, their perspectives and culture," said Lau.Sun Wei, a professor at the China Central Academy of Fine Arts and one of the competition judges, shared the same opinion: "In the collision of culture, we may find creativity."Despite the language difficulties, international and local students communicated their ideas through the colors and lines on paper using pencils, crayon and brushes in their hands.Organizers of the event were also hoping to discover local talents of an international standard. As a result, 12 experts were invited to the judging panel, many of whom are founders of similar competitions in their respective countries.Among the judges was Kosta Hadzi Antonovski, known as the "godfather" of children's art education. He said the competition reflects the fact Hong Kong has become a city of art.Nellie Fong Wong Kut-man, chairwoman of the ICPC organizing committee, announced the kick-off of next year's competition, and revealed that an exhibition of the artworks, or even the possibility of a charity auction, is under discussion with the Hong Kong Tourism Board.
