PLAY, of course, stands for People Learning About Yuma. This year's event is slated for Oct. 5 at the Yuma Civic Center, located off Avenue A by the water tower.About 4,000 people have attended in past years of Yuma PLAY Day, which is hosted by the Yuma Jaycees. The goal of the event is to "raise the awareness of our own citizens about all the local businesses and the opportunities that are available to them right here in their own backyards," said Peggy Collins with the Yaycees.Collins said Yuma PLAY Day helps "destroy the myth that you have to go out of town to shop or for entertaining things to do." She added that the event helps "build pride in our community."This is Yuma PLAY Day's 18th year of celebrating its favorite town. The event was created by Yuma Community Marketing Group, which sold PLAY Day to Yuma Jaycees two years ago.The event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with free admission."People can bring the e迷你倉最平tire family. It's going to be a great family-friendly day," Collins said. "There's going to be something for every age that will entertain them."The event will feature booths representing businesses and non profit organizations from throughout the community. There will also be entertainment, such as belly dancers, a church dance group for seniors, and Sheylyn James, a recording artist from Nashville."Sheylyn sings older-style country," Colllins said. "I think winter visitors will especially enjoy her music."The event will likely have 20 vendors, but organizers are hoping for 30. "Vendors are still coming in, even though our deadline has passed. We are still trying to fill up the space we have," Collins said. "We could still possibly take vendors through the weekend, after that we will probably have to start cutting it off."The cost for a booth is $100 for a business or $40 for nonprofit organization."We have actually reduced the prices this year, trying to get more participation," she said. For more information, contact Collins at 446-2443.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 The Sun (Yuma, Ariz.)
