The Redbirds' last win over Edwardsville came in a 20-13 victory in 2007 at Alton, where the Tigers have lost just once since 1985. Edwardsville defeated the Redbirds 49-13 last season and has won the last five meetings with Alton. The Redbirds and Tigers have played 18 games -- Edwardsville is 15-3 in those dates -- since the series resumed as a SWC matchup in 1996 after being dormant from 1989-95. Alton lost at O'Fallon 21-7 last week after beating Cahokia 26-8 in Week 2. The Tigers, ranked No. 4 in the Class 7A state poll, beat East St. Louis 29-28 last week to start 3-0 for the first time since 2008. Edwardsville has not been 4-0 since 2006 when an unbeaten getaway was stopped at 5-0 with a Week 6 loss to Alton (17-14).CM (1-2) at Triad (0-3)Time: 7 p.m. Place: Triad High SchoolBoth the Eagles and Knights welcome a fresh start with the opening of Mississippi Valley Conference play. Civic Memorial is coming off back-to-back losses to unbeaten teams in Breese Mater Dei (27-7) and Centralia (20-17). Triad is 0-3 for the first time since 2007, when the Knights rebounded to earn a share of the Valley title with Mascoutah and qualify for postseason. CM beat Triad 17-12 last season, marking just its second win in the last 12 meetings between the teams. The Eagles defeated Triad 35-21 in 2010 to end a nine-game losing streak in the series. The Knights went 4-5 last season, snapping a run of eight consecutive playoff appearances.Jersey (2-1) at Highland (3-0)Time: 7 p.m. Place: Memorial StadiumBilled as the Game of the Year in the MVC, defending Valley champion Jersey takes on a Bulldogs squad considered its biggest threat to the throne. The hype is just two years removed from a Week 8 date in this series that saw 1-6 Jersey beat 0-7 Highland in a MVC basement battle. The Panthers also defeated the Bulldogs 33-22 last season in Jerseyville, where Highland has won just twice in 12 meetings since 1988. The Bulldogs, who have won four of the last six with the Panthers, crushed Mattoon 56-0 last week after beating Mount Zion 52-28 and DuQuoin 44-0. Those three teams have a combined record of 1-8. Jersey bounced back from a season-opening loss to Decatur MacArthur (36-28) to beat Granite City 44-28 and Mount Zion 66-22. That win at Mount Zion last week matched last season's 66-24 win at Waterloo as the Panthers' highest scoring game since beating EA-WR 69-13 in 1987.EA-WR (2-1) at Freeburg (1-2)Time: 7 p.m. Place: Freeburg High SchoolThe Midgets defeated East Alton-Wood River 21-20 last season to deny the Oilers their first three-game winning streak since 2006. EA-WR again targets a third straight victory after beating Wesclin 20-13 last week and Metro East Lutheran 12-0 in Week 2. Freeburg has lost two in a row -- to Breese Central (28-27) and Carlyle (7-0) -- after opening with a 29-26 win over Massac County. This is the first of three consecutive road games for EA-WR.Carlinville (2-1) at Pana (1-2)Time: 7 p.m. Place: Brummett FieldThe Cavaliers travel to Pana looking to bounce back from last week's 42-20 home loss to Greenville. Pana lost to Gillespie 42-22 last week and is looking to avoid a 1-3 start for the first time since 2007, when the Panthers lost their last seven in a 1-8 season. Pana beat Carlinville 29-21 last season to account for the Cavs' lone regular-season defeat. The teams have met eight times since 2000, with Carlinville holding a 5-3 edge in the series.Southwestern (0-3) at Gillespie (3-0)Time: 7 p.m. Place: Alumni FieldThe Miners are looking to extend their best start since 2001 against a Piasa Birds team off to its worst start since breaking at 0-4 in 1995. Gillespie defeated Southwestern 7-6 last season in the first meeting between the teams since 2008. The Miners have won three of the last five vs. Southwestern and hold a 28-22-1 edge in 51 games played between the Macoupin County foes. Gillespie has scored at least 42 points in each of its first three games. The Vandals and Shells have met seven times since 2000, with Vandalia holding a 5-2 edge. Vandalia's three losses -- to Staunton (40-12), Carlinville (46-0) and Gillespie (46-12) -- have come against teams with a combined record of 8-1.Litchfield (1-2) at Staunton (3-0)Time: 7 p.m. Place: Staunton High SchoolThe Bulldogs stayed unbeaten by defeating Vandalia 40-12 last week, while Litchfield picked up its first win by beating Southwestern 30-15. Staunton beat the Purple Panthers 41-8 last season in their first meeting since a SCC East date in 2008. The Bulldogs have won four in a row against Litchfield since the Panthers last defeated the Dogs 34-13 in 2005.Mount Olive (2-1) at Nokomis (2-1)Time: 7 p.m. Place: Nokomis High SchoolThe Wildcats sustained their first loss last week, dropping a shootout with Marquette Catholic 48-40 in Mount Olive. Nokomis also lost after a 2-0 start, falling to unbeaten Fisher 28-20. Nokomis beat Mount Olive 55-19 last season. The Redskins also routed the Wildcats 48-6 in 2011 after Mount Olive had won the previous seven meetings between the teams.Carrollton (3-0) at Pleasant Hill (2-1)Time: 7:30 p.m. Place: Pleasant Hill High SchoolThe Hawks are ranked No. 6 in the Class 1A state poll and coming off a 24-6 victory over West Central. The Wolves got spanked by Greenfield 34-6 last week after a 2-0 start. Carrollton crushed P-Hill 51-0 last season and has beaten the Wolves 13 times in 14 meetings since Pleasant Hill last won an outright WIVC South title in 1998.North Greene (2-1) at Greenfield (2-1)Time: 7:30 p.m. Place: Fleur de Lis FieldA key WIVC South matchup is set in Greenfield, where North Greene is looking to reach 3-1 for the first time since its 9-0 regular season in 2004. The Spartans will have to reverse a trend against the Tigers, who have beaten North Greene 11 times in 13 games since 2000. Greenfield defeated the Spartans 22-8 last season after posting shutouts of 47-0 in 2011 and 58-0 in 2010 against North Greene. Greenfield defeated Pleasant Hill 34-6 last week, while North Greene defeated Calhoun 34-14.Calhoun (1-2) at West Central (1-2)Time: 7 p.m. Place: West Central High SchoolThe Warriors and Cougars both look to avoid a 1-3 hole when they meet in Winchester. Calhoun has won seven of the last 10 games vs. the Cougars, but West Central shut out the Warriors 32-0 last season. Calhoun has lost two straight after opening with a 20-12 victory over Jacksonville Routt.Saturday's GamesKincaid South Fork (1-2) at Marquette (1-2)Time: 7 p.m. Place: Public School StadiumThe Explorers gave coach Matt Bucher his first career victory last week with a 48-40 win at Mount Olive. South Fork also got its first win, beating Bunker Hill 55-13. Defense remains a work in progress for Marquette, which has not allowed fewer than 41 points in any of its first three games. The Explorers shut out the Ponies 49-0 last season. South Fork finished 4-5 in 2012, marking its 16th losing season in 17 years.Pittsfield (0-3) at Bunker Hill (0-3)Time: 1 p.m. Place: Bunker Hill High SchoolBoth the Saukees and Minutemen are searching for victory No. 1 in a Saturday matinee in Bunker Hill. Pittsfield lost at Chillicothe IVC 30-16 last week, while Bunker Hill lost to Kincaid South Fork 55-13. The Saukees whipped the Minutemen 67-7 last season. Bunker Hill has lost its last 11 games and 36 of its last 37.Seymour (Ind.) Trinity (2-2) at Metro East Lutheran (1-2)Time: 2 p.m. Place: ME Lutheran High SchoolThe Trinity Cougars make the 500-plus miles round trip to Edwardsville to meet the Knights. Trinity beat Metro 56-7 last season in Indiana. Trinity is coming off a 54-8 win over Whitestown (Ind.) Traders Point Christian Academy after losing its previous two games.
