Community College soccer: VC women off to 2-0 start

Source: Ventura County Star, Calif.儲存倉Sept. 01--Having beaten two of the top teams from Northern California, Steve Hoffman only had one issue with the opening weekend of the Ventura College women's soccer season. It began the season rather than finished it."It can't be the end of the year already, can it?" the VC coach asked jokingly.Macey Herrera scored two second-half goals and sophomore Taylor C'debaca also netted as the Pirates knocked off defending state semifinalist Sierra, 3-1, on the final day of the annual Nike Soccer Classic on Saturday afternoon at the VC Sportsplex. When combined with Thurday's win over City College of San Francisco, the result meant Ventura (2-0), ranked No. 16 in the NSCAA national coaches' poll, opened its season with wins over the No. 18 and No. 4 teams in the country."It's a big win, of course," Hoffman said. "You've got to give the kids credit."Both opponents have represented NorCal in the state Final Four over the past two seasons."Not many people will beat these teams," Hoffman said.Herrera took control of a match tied, 1-1, with 20 minutes to play. The Buena High product and Cal State Northrdge transfer earned and converted a penalty kick to give the Pirates the lead in the 72nd minute, then converted a defensive mistake into an insurance goal three minutes later.Having provided the goals, the center forward then added some entertainment, using a spin move to beat two opponents while holding possession to help run out the clock."You liked that, didn't you?" Hoffman asked. "She's on another level."Counting last week's scrimmage at Orange Coast, Herrera has netted four times in her first three matches in orange and black.Just as it had two nights prior in the 2-迷你倉價錢 win over visiting CCSF, the Pirates jumped on their visitors from NorCal. C'debaca, who missed much of her freshman campaign with a knee injury, smashed VC into the lead in the 25th minute, pulling up on a partial breakaway to finish low.Sierra equalized nine minutes later on a spectacular goal from midfielder Virginia Millan, who floated in a first-time chip into the upper corner from 25 yards. After playing only 15 in Thursday's win over San Francisco, Hoffman played at least 22 in the oppressive afternoon heat."It's a good team effort," midfielder A.J. Tewes said. "A lot of people played today and we needed them."Sophomore Lupita Magana, playing as a central midfielder, was one of the few players to complete all 90 minutes."This is our preseason," Magana said. "We're still getting into shape. But these are the type of games that really get us ready for the season."Oxnard stays unbeatenThe Oxnard College women's soccer team stayed unbeaten and unscored upon with a 0-0 draw with visiting Sacramento City in the opening match of its annual Condor Classic tournament.Freshman goalkeeper Andrea Bautista kept her second shutout in two matches."You've got to like that," Oxnard coach Bill Propster said.Oxnard (1-0-1) had several chances to grab all three points.Freshman forward Angela Turner-Harvey had a goal disallowed in the first half. Freshman Breanna Martin hit the post and also earned a penalty kick, from which sophomore Emily Perez rattled the crossbar. The Condors host Antelope Valley Sunday at noon to conclude the event.Copyright: ___ (c)2013 Ventura County Star (Camarillo, Calif.)
