Women's College Basketball:Dakota State applies pressure to PC

Source: American News, Aberdeen, S.mini storageD.Oct. 31--Turnovers and missed opportunities left Presentation still looking for its first win of the season. The Saints committed 30 turnovers and shot just 29.8 percent from the field in a 71-60 loss to Dakota State in non-conference women's basketball play Wednesday night at the Strode Center."We ended up turning the ball over 30 times, and any time you do that, you're not going to win basketball games," said Presentation first-year head coach Eric Nelson, who said the team had made improvements from its season-opening loss on Monday. "They did a good job of pressuring us and we just looked a little lost when they put that much pressure on."Dakota State (1-0) turned up the pressure defense in the second half and turned Saints turnovers into a couple of quick transition buckets that stretched a 47-41 lead into a 54-41 advantage."The dilemma was, when we played it well, we caused problems for them," said Dakota State head coach Jeff Dittman. "When we didn't play it well, we put them on the free throw line. They're very good at getting to the free throw line and they're outstanding when get to the free throw line."Presentation (0-2), which had closed the opening stanza on a 6-2 run to close to within three at the break, suffered through a long scoring drought midway through the second half, managing just four free throws in the stretch."Any time you go five or six minutes without scoring, the game kind of gets away from you," said Nelson. "I thought we had good looks. We had some good opportunities, it just didn't go in."Janvier Barbarin broke through with a lay-up that sparked a 6-0 run for the Saints to pull back within 13, but back-to-back offensive rebounds and put-backs by Mobridge-Pollock graduate Erin Rabenberg ended the run and put the game essentially out of reach.Despite the cold shooting night from the floor, the Saints were a solid 25 of 32 (78.1 percent) from the free throw line and had Dakota State in foul trouble throughout the night. Starter Julie Munson and reserve forward Katy Pillar both fouled out of the contest with significant time left on the clock."When we did handle the pressure, we did a great job of getting to the free throw line and making our free throws," said Nelson. "We know we have that in is. We know we have the capabilities of handling that pressure and doing a lot of good things. We just have to be more consistent."The early foul trouble forced the Trojans to switch up their defensive scheself storagee in the first half, a switch the Saints used to their advantage, closing from a 10-point deficit to just a one-possession game at the break."It was one of those, because of foul trouble early, we had to go to a zone," said Dittman. "It worked for a little while, but then Presentation started penetrating and getting what they wanted. I was happy to be in the man-to-man the second half."Hannah Phillips was just 2-for-18 from the field, but finished 9-of-10 from the line to finish with 13 points for the Saints. Barbarin came off the bench for another 13, while Rachel Fuhrmann and Jackie Miller had 12 apiece.Cassie Jacobson and Pillar, both reserves for the Trojans, had 13 points to lead Dakota State."We had moments where we looked like we're going to play some pretty good ball and we got some things we're going to go home and work on," said Dittman of his team's season opener. The non-conference contest was an early look at another North Star Athletic Association opponent for both teams."Hopefully when we see them again, we'll be a better team and I'm sure they'll be a better team, too," said Nelson.Presentation continues non-conference play on Tuesday, taking on Dakota Wesleyan in Mitchell.Follow @J_Scoby on Twitter.Dakota State 71, Presentation 60DAKOTA STATE: Kylie Westover 4-10 0-0 10, BreeAna Olson 2-3 0-1 4, Julie Munson 2-3 0-0 4, Erin Rabenberg 4-10 2-4 11, Alyson Drooger 0-8 2-2 2, Kendra Lindbald 1-4 0-0 3, Jayda Swenson 2-5 4-4 9, Rachelle Moore 1-2 0-0 2, Cassie Jacobsen 3-7 7-8 13, Katy Pillar 5-10 3-8 13.PRESENTATION: Hannah Phillips 2-18 9-10 13, Kaylee Voorhees 0-1 0-0 0, Abbie Geraci 0-4 1-2 1, Rachel Fuhrmann 4-8 4-4 12, Jackie Miller 5-14 1-2 12, Caitlin Robinson 0-0 0-0 0, Sierra Benning 0-4 5-8 5, Taalyr Egeness 0-0 0-0 0, Sydney Larson 0-0 4-4 4, Janvier Barbarin 6-8 1-2 13.Halftime score -- Dakota State 35-32. 3-point field goals -- DSU 5-19 Westover 2-7, Rabenberg 1-4, Drooger 0-1, Lindbald 1-3, Swenson 1-2, Jacobson 0-2); PC 1-5 (Geraci 0-1, Miller 1-3, Benning 0-1).
